BEIJING, China (CNN) -- At least four people were killed and 44 injured in a chemical plant explosion early Tuesday in southern China, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported, quoting rescuers.
Seventeen people were missing after the blast, which happened in China's Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, Xinhua said.
More than 10,000 residents living in a 1.8-miles (3 kilometer) radius of the plant were evacuated, the agency said, citing a source from the rescue headquarters.
Witnesses said they saw thick smoke envelop the plant, and the large size of the fire hampered access for emergency crews, Xinhua said.
The plant is owned by Guangxi Guangwei Chemical Company and produces chemicals mainly used in adhesives, paints, and coatings, the agency said.
